After the end of World War II, R. C. Gibbs, former president of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and at that time chairman of the Division of Physical Sciences at the National Research and armaments. Deane Judd spent 43 years as a staff member of the Photometry and Colorimetry Section of the National Bureau of Standards (now National Institute of Standards and Technology) and served as Director of the Technical Secretariat of the International Commission of Illumination (CIE), from 1948-1955. He was the premier figure in color science in the United States at that time.
