A nanocrystalline silicon diode operates as an efficient surface-emitting ballistic cold cathode in vacuum. The availability of this emitter arrays for a flat panel display is demonstrated under a full-color simple-matrix driving. The devices can be fabricated on both TFT- and PDP-compatible glass substrates by polycrystalline silicon based low-temperature processing. Experimental and theoretical analyses of the ballistic emission mechanism are also presented.
