Conventional shot peening (SP), ultrasonic shot peening (USP) and laser shock peening (LSP) are three processes that are widely studied as mechanical prestressing treatments. They are widely used or considered in industry and in particular in aeronautical industry. Each one is known for its capacity to improve mechanical properties and fatigue of mechanical workpieces. There are based on the same principle: impacting the workpiece causing plastic deformation in order to improve mechanical properties. Conventional shot peening and ultrasonic shot peening are quite similar. In both treatments the specimen is hit by shot with the aim to induce severe plastic deformation. The main differences are the size and velocity of the shot. In LSP the surface of the treated part is modified with shock waves. These waves propagate into the material and induce local plastic deformations. Each of these three processes has its strengths and weaknesses.
