A time-efficient development procedure for the fermentation part of the production of recombinant proteins is proposed and applied to the specific case of the virus capsid protein VP1. It is based on an optimization procedure that combines model identification with process optimization in an evolutionary way. The model used is based on a mass balance complemented by a neural network-based representation of the kinetics. Significant improvements of the process performance could be obtained in a few iteration cycles of the optimization procedure.
