This paper proposes a five-class vibration classification of floors, which are used in residential and office buildings. The classification is material independent and it presumes that walking-induced vibrations are accepted as the basis of the design. The classification of the floors to vibrations classes will assist designers and clients in making decisions regarding floor vibrations. For floors with fundamental frequency over 10 Hz, for floating floors and for raised floors, the classification proposes a deflection limit due to 1 kN concentrated load. For floors with lower fundamental frequency, limit values for acceleration are proposed. Also a limit for the sloping of surface structure due to 1 kN concentrated load is proposed for all kind of floors, this is relevant for soft toppings. The given limits are based on past test data of about 100 full size experiments including 14 different floor types from a wide span range. The measurement of design quantities and the subjective rating of intensity and acceptability were made using a standardised testing procedure. In rating by sense perceptions the observations were made based on body feeling and on vibrations of different objects. An example of a well performing floor for wooden houses is also presented.
