The dynamic adaptive grid (DGA) technique was developed and implemented. The technique clusters grid nodes in regins of rapid variation in the temperature field thereby capturing motions of the thermocline. The model was run in adaptive and non-adaptive mode to reveal enhancements due solely to increased localized resolution A series of numerical experiments were devised to incite the formation and propagtion of an internal wave on an idealized thermocline. The results are compared qualitatively and the predicted internal wave speed is compared to the analtic solution for the idealized thermocline. The DGA technique showed marked enhancenet both qualitatively and quantitatively especially with a small number of grid nodes in the vertical. The uniform grid placement methods showed better auantitative results when the number of grids was large enough to fully resolve the veritical structure.
