摘要

The 2001 Bhuj earthquake provided some classic failures and insightful evaluation of the seismic performance of Indian RC frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infills, the predominant construction type. Seismic design is usually not performed in the country. Therefore, numerous deficiencies, from points of view of strength, stiffness, ductility and configuration, are introduced in buildings at the design stage itself. Quantitative seismic performance evaluation of two example buildings substantiates the damages sustained by them during this earthquake. The paper points out that a large building stock across the country is vulnerable under impending earthquakes, and needs to be strengthened.
