Asymptomatic Atrlal Fibrillation: How Frequent Is It ? What Are the Practical/Therapeutic Implications ?

A survey conducted among cardiologists in France [1] showed a very large spectrum of symptoms in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF) in its different forms: paroxysmal, permanent, or persistent or recent according to the now largely accepted definitions. The main data about symptoms in this study are presented in Tables 1 and 2, from which several observations can be drawn. In spite of the efforts made to relate symptoms to the clinical or ECG pattern of AF, it was difficult to correlate clinical manifestations with any other parameters such as the history, the paroxysmal or permanent character of the arrhythmia, the heart rate or even the treatment.
