A new configuration of single mode fiber is proposed to interconnect on free space. Basic characteristics of the new configuration, including long working distances and wide tolerances, are experimentally verified. A graded index (GRIN) fiber of 125μm-diameter having no cladding is used to expand beam diameter and to focus received beam, and a thermally expanded core (TEC) single mode fiber (SMF) is also used to increase lateral misalignment tolerance. The measured tolerances for 1-dB coupling loss increment against axial and lateral misalignments were +-1540μm and +-l9.2μm, respectively.
