A demonstration 1176 Watt peak (Wp) grid-connected photovoltaic (GC-PV) solar generators unit has been acquired, implemented and operated at the Technical Training Center of the Canal Electricity Company (CECo.), Ismailia, Egypt. in framework of a linkage project between the Egyptian Suez Canal University and the American University of Texas at Arlington -Energy Systems Research Centre (ESRC). The project is sponsored by the Foreign Relations Co-ordination Unit (FRCU) of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities and funded by the USAID program. The project aims evaluating and introducing the photovoltaic grid-connected technology to the electricity sector in Egypt. Technical and economic aspects of this technique have been considered. Operational data are acquired, analyzed and presented. First results demonstrate a generated electrical energy of 1690 kWh/year made available by the GC-PV unit and fed to the utility grid. Issues of reliability and safety are meeting the internationally recognized standards. The results obtained are encouraging for electric utilities in Egypt for further serious consideration of this technology.
