Passive Houses are buildings that feature slow transient thermal behaviour. A parameter step change (i.e. outdoor temperature variation) produces lengthy and slow answer of the indoor atmosphere. It results in a damping effect of the variation of the boundary parameters. This may enable space heating load computation by using static calculation methods. However, accurate sizing of renewable energy converters and HVAC system still necessitates time dependent computational method in order to make heat supply and demand match. The success of achieving Passive House requirements relies on details. Our goal is to investigate how far those details should be taken into account to provide Passive House architects and HVAC engineers with simple, comprehensible but reliable simulation tools and sizing guidelines for them to offer their customers environmental friendly and very low fossil energy consuming buildings. This paper reports our first steps and results, detailing the measurement system of a Passive House building, and the simulation model used to describe building thermal behaviour and HVAC system. We established that renewable energies were economically viable for Passive Houses but stressed at the same time the importance of adequate system sizing on the investment and operation costs.
