摘要

The mechanical property requirements of tribological ceramic coatings are discussed, and the ratio of hardness (H) to elastic modulus (E) is cited as an important parameter in optimising performance. Developments in multilayered and nanocomposite coatings are outlined, which permit the achievement of controlled H/E ratios, and thus improved tribological properties.
