STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY NUCLEAR SAFETY RESEARCH PRIORITIES AT THE UK AND EUROPEAN LEVEL ― A UK REGULATORY VIEW

The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) is the regulator fur nuclear safety at civil nuclear installations in the UK. It oversees a programme of nuclear safety research in the UK and is involved with research overseas, mainly through international organisations. Plant life management and ageing (which includes engineering structural integrity assessment) are a large part of this programme. NII is currently reviewing the strategic needs of the safety research programme in order to reflect both the continuing changes in the structure of the nuclear industry and the maturity of the existing operations. In parallel, NII has been participating in the development of the requirements in the area of fission safety for the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission. Using these general experiences and more specifically structural integrity input, this paper will give a UK regulatory view of the needs for nuclear safety research in engineering structural integrity assessment.
