This paper reviews the cause and effect of oil mist detection systems when used not only as a safety device but also as a tool to aid the health monitoring of engines or rotating machinery. It has been mandatory for the Merchant Navy to use either OMD's or temperature bearing sensors on slow or medium speed diesel engines for a long time. Unfortunately the unreliability of some systems in the form of slow response times and continual false alarms have led to disquiet amongst users. The paper focuses on oil mist, its causes, and various aspects concerned with crankcase safety and machinery space protection. It goes on to explain how the accurate and immediate measurement of oil mist at the source of a problem can be put to good use as an important part of health monitoring whilst continuing its role as an essential safety device.
