1. Zonal models are very efficient (computational times from a few minutes to a few hours) and can be used for optimisation of furnace operation (e.g. to find optimal setpolnts). rapid evaluation of design choices, and for transient problems (control). 2. C.F.D. based models, using commercial software, are more and more used to assess furnace performances. They give very detailed Information, still at the cost of large computing times (days or... weeks). 3. In the future, zonal and C.F.D. based models will be more and more associated as complementary furnace modelling tools, C.F.D. being used to provide the Information about gas flow and combustion required by 2-D and 3-D zone models. 4. C.F.D. model reduction techniques have to be developed, both for the development of C.F.D. based models of large, multi-burner furnaces, as well as for the development of multidimensional zone models. 5. The validation of more sophisticated models requires the development of more sophisticated measurement techniques, which should be applicable at plant level.
