Decision-making in the choice of alternative design is one of the main tasks in engineering design. Axiomatic design (AD) provides a framework for describing "design objects" which is consistent for all types of design problems and at all levels of detail. Thus, designers can quickly understand the relationships between the intended functions of an object and the means by which they are achieved. Additionally, the design axioms provide a rational means for evaluating the quality of proposed designs; the design process that is used guides designers to consider alternatives at all levels of detail and to make choices between these alternatives more explicit. Uncertainty and random nature of design parameters involved in the design of structures and machine elements lead mainly to failure of the system or components. Engineering design consists of different components of a structure or machine that satisfies various criteria of safety, serviceability and durability under the action of loads throughout their lifetime. This means that a component should be designed such that it has a higher resistance than the effect caused by loads. Probabilistic Design Methodology (PDM) is concerned with the probability of failure or preferably, reliability, the probability that a structure will perform its intended function without failing. PDM is capable of handling the sensitivities of design parameters by consistently applying randomness and uncertainties in the calculations. This paper presents a brief overview of a design process that incorporates AD and PDM, and an application to D5 umbilical retract mechanism. The result of the applications demonstrates effectiveness of the AD and PDM in terms of reliability, cost, and robustness towards the design of D5 umbilical retract mechanism (URM).
