Tomsk merchants and their role in formation of Tomsk architectural image (end of the 19-ebgining of the 20 centuries)

Analyzing the historical constructions of Tomsk which have been kept up to present time we see that there are many buildings constructed by order and on money of the merchants. These buildings determine image of the city that was assigned a status of the historical one in 1990. The merchants constructed dwelling, trade and revenue houses, big and small shops, and warehouses for themselves (fig. 1). Their constructions expressed an originality of a merchant's household activity and were some kind of any merchant's wealth testimony, made creditors and business partners trust them, i.e. carried out manufacturing - representation function, that was available for business. The preserved historical buildings play the relevant role in present life of the city, for instance: the Trade house" E.Kuchterin and sons" is a city administrative building; I.I.Gadalov's revenue house is a greengrocer's and an administrative building; Koroleva's revenue house is the schools of music and art, etc.
