Pharmaceutical excipients can be moved using a new chip-based powder-handling device. Mixing of dyed samples of lactose powder was achieved. Common wet etching techniques were combined with aligned placement of different glass plates to provide a channel in which powder particles could be moved. The driving force was provided by 256 nitrogen streams on each side of the channel, which build an air cushion. The results show the ability of the system to be used as a mixing device for pharmaceutical powders.
