In 1997, a polar orbiting satellite, named ADEOS (ADvanced Earth Observation Satellite), encountered a serious anomaly that the flexible solar array (26 meters long) had been broken partially and after some time it was broken completely resulting in the power system shut-down and total loss of the missions. After the investigation, it turned out that the tension control mechanism had experienced extremely critical operational conditions leading to a partial break of the blanket. This changed the dynamical characteristics of the solar array as combined with a kind of stick-slip motion along the translational motion, which stimulated undesirable vibration of the solar array repeatedly. In this paper, a dynamic model of the observed stick-slip motion is proposed. The model is evaluated using the flight data and ground test data.
