Background radiation exposure levels:Indian scenario

Man has been exposed to radiation emitted by naturally occurring species like ~(238)U, ~(232)Th, and~(40)K ever since his existence on Earth. He has been exposed to this radiation until recent times, when growth of nuclear energy created additional sources of exposure, like fallout from weapon tests, radioactive releases from reactor operations and accidents, exposure due to radioactive waste deposals, and other industrial, medical, and agricultural uses of radioisotopes. Still, the major contribution to background radiation exposure arises from natural sources.
