This study is composed a group of 20 patients with severe gingival hyper-plasia. Surgical procedures were performed in select sites using a CO_2 10,6mum laser with the objective of aiding the reestablishment and control of their normal physiological functions, through gingivoplasties. The powers used in the applications were determined according to the necessities of each case, varying from 8 to 12W, swiftlase, spot size 2.0mm, fluency of 2.5 - 4.0W/ mm~2, depending upon the nature, localization and extension of the enlarged gingivae. The number of CO_2 laser applications varied from 2 to 4 sessions. Most of the patients were under anticonvulsant, immunosuppressant and calcium channel blocker medication and many presented oral respiration. The patients were reevaluated four weeks after finishing the laser treatment. The postoperative period was painless and bloodless in the great majority of the cases, with no need for sutures or any kind of medication. This conservative surgical procedure, using a CO_2 laser, gave surprisingly satisfactory results with reestablishment of normal oral functions.
