SWAN model predictions of wind generated waves are validated with experimental data for a large shallow lake named 'IJsselmeer'. Both global scatter plot comparisons and in-detail case studies were used for the model validation. Wave heights were well predicted except in conditions of strong depth-induced breaking. SWAN's performance with respect to wave spectra was a mixed bag whereas wave periods were consistently underestimated. The latter is probably due to imperfect modelling of the four-wave-interactions. Finally, much attention was given to the convergence behaviour of SWAN, which was improved by using the experimental version SWAN40.16.
