This paper presents the results of experiments concerning thermal diffusivity of dead pine bark (Pinus sylvestris L.) as well as the determination of temperatures on the bark surface in the prescribed surface fires. The insulating abilities of both dead and living bark to prevent the lethal temperature from penetrating into the cambium zone were determined. Account was taken of the effect of bark thickness and humidity, the levels and the duration of exposure to temperatures occurring during surface fires. These results were applied to surface fires. Conclusions were presented concerning the effect of these fires on tree stands, depending on the season when they took place. These conclusions are useful for estimating fire damage to pine stands.
