The paper first presents lessons from the damage to pile foundation caused by past earthquakes and explains the transition of earthquake resistant design methods of pile foundation. Finally it introduces new technologies of pile foundation and emphasizes the necessity of nonlinear analysis methods to investigate the nonlinear behavior and failure mechanism of pile foundation during strong earthquake motions, soil liquefaction and succeeding lateral ground displacements.
