The behaviour of unsaturated soils, particularly clays, is difficult to understand. However, a thorough understanding of the mechanics of unsaturated soils is necessary for the design and construction of structures in and on these soils. The engineering behaviour of unsaturated fine-grained soils depends upon the amount of suction, the degree of saturation and the in situ water content. Hence, an in situ measurement of these parameters giving their realistic estimate is essential for the design andconstruction of structures. This paper identifies some of the important parameters for in situ testing and examines the techniques used for measuring them.
