Two miniature machine tool testbeds were developed. An open architecture, PC-based CNC controller was added to one of the testbeds to facilitate the creation of 3D workpiece features. Surface roughness values on the bottom of slots machined in five different materials were measured and were found to be comparable to values obtained on larger machine tools. Features containing both concave and convex portions were also machined and the form errors were determined to be between 5.0 and 6.8 μm, while achieving MMR's significantly larger than previously reported values.
