EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE ON WATER RESOURCES PROJECTS IN GUJARAT, INDIA

There are more than 4300 large dams in our country, out of which about 537 large dams are situated in Gujarat state. Most of the dams damaged during the January 2001 earthquake in Gujarat were constructed by local authorities, i.e., Panchayats, NGOs etc, decades back and BIS codes were not fully observed while designing and constructing them. More severe damage occur in the dam when an earthquake of high intensity strikes the dam for which it is not designed. This paper is based on the visit of inspection teams from CWC to earthquake affected areas after the event and presents the after effects of the Bhuj earthquake and the types of damages that occurred in the Water Resources Projects of Kachchh and Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The paper also discusses some case studies of damaged dams. It has been seen in the Gujarat earthquake that similar types of damages occurred in most structures irrespective of orientation of dam with respect to epicenter of the earthquake.
