SODETEL: Software development improvement for remote sensing and network management applications using component-based quality assurance methodologies

The applicability (benefits and drawbacks) that new methodologies and technologies have in remote sensing and network management applications development and their impact in business objectives (cost, time and quality) of SME engineering organisations are linked to a set of measurable objective factors. These factors need cover management (study the impact in the organisation following a metrics plan including development effort and time, system size, resource usage and maturity level) and technical (analyse the domain reusability and the process and product quality factors) perspectives. SODETEL is a project aiming the use of a component-based approach to the development of remote sensing and network management applications, validating the innovative methodologies and tools necessary for design, implement and manage these software systems. The work results in a well-defined set of processes and methods along with their supporting technologies. The component-based development has a good acceptance in all the fields (both internally and externally to the company) and the adoption of methodologies to support improvement and maturity processes is very difficult in the SME's without the problem reduction from big developments (> 10.000 LOC) to smaller problems. The Team-work development adaptation is not complex, been favoured by the existence of tools and meetings of preparation and follow-up (project plan, engineer roles definition,...).
