In the search for ways to mitigate the expensive problem of crude oil fouling in refinery preheaters, one suggestion has been to use extended surface. The few times this has been tried in industry have produced conflicting results; research data are needed. This paper describes a preliminary comparison of a plain tube and a radial low-finned tube in longitudinal flow. Results show that the amount of improvement from the finned surface depends on the operating conditions.
