摘要

In this paper, the chip formation process in orthogonal metal cutting operation is analyzed using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method. The ALE approach overcomes the difficulties usually experienced in application of conventional Lagrangian and Eulerian methods to this problem. Using the ALE approach, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the influence of cutting conditions such as cutting speed, feed rate and rake angel on the chip formation process. The results of these studies are verified through comparison with available experimental data, which show fairly good qualitative and quantitative agreement between predicted and experimental results.
