There have been only a few cases in which hydrostatic water bearings were applied to machine-tool tables. When constant-pressure hydrostatic water bearings are used, their orifice restrictors can be easily affected by dust, bacteria, etc. Therefore, constant-flow hydrostatic water bearings, which need no restrictors, are more suitable. In this paper, theoretical studies have been performed for the basic design of the hydrostatic water bearings. Effects of bearing-pad shape and water-flow conditions on sustaining force and static stiffness of a machine table supported by the water bearings are clarified. A recommended bearing-pad shape is also discussed.
