Functionalising of Textile Surfaces with a Combination of Laser Treatment and Sol-Gel Coating

Increasingly, we expect our textiles to be more and more resilient. Material properties like water resistance, oil repellence, or non-flammability are almost standard. A main challenge of chemical coatings is their stability. After some washes, the functionality of the textiles decreases and eventually disappears as the treatment wears away. On the other hand, surface functionalization using laser radiation is being intensely researched for many materials, such as polymers used for implants. A control of the surface properties, like hydrophobicity, by pulse energy, wavelength and pulse overlap was developed. The article describes a novel combination of laser treatment and sol-gel coating which enhances the stability of the functionalization of textile surfaces.
