Identification of unknown sources of non-CO_2 greenhouse gases, a theoretical approach

A research study has been performed with the objective to identify yet unknown sources of non-CO_2 greenhouse gases in the Netherlands, as part of the ongoing "Reduction program non-CO_2 greenhouse gases" of the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. The greenhouse gases CH_4, N_2O, HFCs, PFCs and SF_6 have been considered relevant for this study. Three fields of interest have been distinguished: Bioprocesses, Process industry and greenhouse gas production and import. In total 62 "new" sources have been recorded, which corresponds to an estimate of the total emission of 1.9 Mtonnes CO_2-equivalents. The 10 main sources account for 80 % of this emission. These sources are mainly related to biological waste and wastewater treatment. The main non bio-oriented sources identified are: SF_6 emissions related to the production of sound proofed double-glazing and the use of N_2O as anaesthetic in hospitals
