Aquaculture play a very important role in agricultural production in China, especially in the term of agricultural structure adjusting from 1999. The application of information technology were desired to keep up with the development of aquaculture, Intelligent aquaculture information system was developed by China agricultural university, which is a key project of the "863 plan" (the National High Science & Technology Development Plan from 1986 in China). With the prevalent intranet techniques in the world and Client/Server/Server structure, an hybrid information system includes 2 ESs, e.g. fish diseases diagnosis expert system and fresh-water shrimp aquaculture expert system, 1 DSS, 1 tele-diagnosis system, and 9 MIS, such as traditional aquaculture system, industrial aquaculture system, ecological (healthy) aquaculture system, special type culture system, marketing information system, fishery environmental protection system, information consulting system, e-journal system, membership register system, were integrated with the tools of Visual InterDev, java, SQL Server7.0, MSDN, IESDK, Visual J++, Visual C++, Photoshop5.0. The system has been tested and is now in pilot use by fish farmers in the North China region. Some issues on developing web-based expert systems from the experience gained from the research are discussed.
