In response to tightening environmental and legislative pressures, Pilkington pic has developed a unique technology for the reduction of NO{sub}x emissions from most glass melting furnaces, including Float glass. The technology, which Pilkington calls "3R", has been successfully demonstrated on several types of glass furnace. The results of extensive trials show that this technology is able to achieve the highest environmental standards - but, at considerably lower overall costs than any competing process. This paper outlines both the theoretical and practical aspects of this technology and compares it with the main alternatives.
