An Automatic Control System for Clean Coal Combustion on a Chain-Grate Stoker

The combustion of coal on chain-grate stokers in an area which has received little recent attention. Large quantities of coal are still combusted on small rigs yet the potential benefits of modern control methods have not been fully assessed. In order to evaluate these methods a process model has been developed to describe the behaviour of a 1MW chain-grate stoker. The model has been used to develop a control strategy with the ultimate aim of applying the strategy to the test-rig plant. The clean and efficient criterion by which the control strategy seeks to maintain the combustion in the plant has direct consequences for the cleanliness of the air in the local environs of the plant.
