Cleaner Combustion with Water-in-Fuel Emulsion

The findings of a research programme into the combustion of water-in-fuel emulsions are reported. Three experimental studies are described: a photographic examination of atmospheric flames, soot production within a steady-state combustion chamber operating at elevated pressure, and an investigation into the effects of emulsified fuel on the performance of, and emissions from, compression ignition engines. The results are discussed in relation to the findings of other workers and in light of the possible contribution such fuels may make towards cleaner combustion. It is argued that the addition of water to the fuel in the form of an emulsion may provide a useful contribution to the efforts aimed at achieving cleaner combustion. It is also suggested that the amount of water added for optimum benefit depends on several factors including the type of system, the method of emulsion preparation and the conditions of operation.
