The objective of this paper is to investigate the vibration control effect of an offshore platform with viscoelastic dampers, and to present the design and location optimization method of dampers as well. The optimal location of dampers is effective to vibration reduction of the structure, otherwise the unreasonable location of dampers is invalid and even harmful to the structure. Considering the principle of viscoelastic dampers, the mean square deviation of relative displacement between layers is taken to be the rule of damper location in order that the displacement and acceleration response of the offshore platform under wave excitation is reduced to the allowed value. The location of dampers is optimized and the response of the offshore platform is analyzed. The result shows that the amplitudes of displacement and acceleration of the deck motion are reduced by 34.4% and 50%, respectively.
