Currently in the Czech Republic, there are totally 10 coke-oven batteries in operation; one of which is a large volume one. The batteries are built from silica bricks of various forms and material. The coke-oven lining assessment has been based on varying criteria, and the lining's durability in relation to operational conditions has been investigated. New aspects of quantitative parameters and their significance, as well as of their substantiation, have been acquired. Some attention has also been paid to residual quartz correlated to silica dilatabiiity. Except from silica properties, effects of technology and its irregularities have also been investigated with the results recorded. Experiments have proved that the factors, which influence the operational campaign duration, are not only subject to the material quality, formula accuracy, and production technology perfection, but also subject to the observance of the right carbonisation mode. The knowledge acquired has been put into effect in Svitavy Silica Company, which has been able to produce top quality silica bricks.
