Lithium cobalt oxide powders have been synthesized by a newly developed water-in-oil emulsion process to be used as the cathode material in lithium ion batteries. The monophasic LiCoO_2 powders with a layered structure are completely formed after calcining the precursors at 800°C. The cationic concentration of the aqueous phase determines the crystallinity and particle size of the obtained powders. Raising the cationic concentration improves the crystallinity and also increases the particle size of LiCoO_2 powders. LiCoO_2 powders prepared from the high cationic concentration exhibit high discharge capacity, high coulomb efficiency as well as good cyclability.
