What does it mean to violate the second law of thermodynamics?

The question of whether or not the second law of thermodynamics is violated in a particular situation is predicated on the existence of a clear statement of the second law, including any assumptions of applicability. Here we discuss some of the shortcomings of current statements of the second law, such as the implicit assumptions about equilibrium processes, ergodic processes and time dependence.
