THE CEMENT INDUSTRY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In a 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development of the United Nations defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." To embrace sustainable development, business must develop strategies to protect the environment, use natural resources prudently, maintain high economic growth and employment, and achieve inclusive social development. The partnership of government, business, and academia, with an informed and supportive public, is essential. This paper examines some of the opportunities and risks facing the cement industry in its route that will take it from continuous improvement of environmental performance, through risk management of environmental liabilities, toward developing strategies that ensure sustainability.
