This paper discusses how surface roughness of an extrudate depends on extrusion processingconditions. Results of sample test runs with varying extruder barrel temperature, screw speed, and pulltension are presented. This paper also discusses how real-time roughness monitoring can be used as anefficient tool in optimizing cable extrusion processes resulting in improved quality and increasedproduction volume. It is applicable to manufacturing of all types of extruded wires and cables, from thinwires to consumer electronics cables, telecommunication cables and high-capacity power transmissioncables.
