EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MULCHING MATERIALS ON WEED CONTROL, YIELD AND QUALITY OF SUGARCANE

Field experiments, were conducted to study the effect of different mulching materials on weed control, yield and quality of sugarcane during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 planting season under Co-ordinated Agronomic Experiments Scheme. Among the treatments, pressmud mulching @ 25 tonnes/ ha could prove to be effective in controlling monocot weeds and found comparable with herbicide spraying in controlling broad 'leaf weeds. Though the germination and tiller production were low due to pressmud mulching at initial stages, optimum production of millable cane could be achieved at later stages of growth. Pressmud mulching ultimately recorded the highest cane and sugar yield of 92.87 and 11.59 tonnes/ ha and the increase was to the tune of 13 and 18 percent over farmers practice, respectively.
