'High Temperature Gas Measurements in Combustors Using Acoustic Pyrometry Methods'

Acoustic pyrometry methods have been applied to a wide variety of industrial systems including the measurement of furnace exit gas temperatures, waste-to-energy boilers, cement kilns, metal treatment furnaces and many others. Recent work has focused on a proof of concept program directed at exploring the possible application of acoustic methods for measuring the temperature, velocity, and distribution of the hot gases found in jet engines and turbines. This paper reports on the use of correlation methods to measure the temperature and distribution of the hot gasses in a single combustor mounted in a test rig. Work has focused on the use of both active and passive methods using acoustic transducers located around the perimeter of the combustor. The theoretical basis for this work is reported. Experimental verification of the approach will be completed and reported at a later date.
