Fire resist ant composites for use on navy ships

The use of composites for marine applications have the potential to greatly reduce corrosion and reduce weight and cost compared to traditional aluminum and steel structures. Since all low cost resin systems burn when assaulted by fire, the challenge is to develop a fire resistant composite system that will meet the Navy's criteria for fire safety. This paper describes the design, testing and qualification of a low cost fire resistant system using vinyl-ester resin and an intumescent mat material.
