This paper is based on the use of bitumen membranes as barrier coatings to encapsulate steel substrates. It deals with the need for coating selectors to provide an appropriate coating system for asset holders while recognising the values and interests of stakeholders. It will follow the history and evolution of tapes through to their correct use and application in today's environment.
