Corrosion of rebars in reinforced concrete structures is a major problem, especially for structures located in harsh, aggressive marine conditions. One of the most common techniques used to assess the extent of corrosion is half-cell potential mapping. Half-cell potential mapping can be an accurate and helpful tool in determining the causes and extent of reinforcement corrosion and in planning for the repair work. Many mistakes can be made in taking and interpreting potentials, leading to an inaccurate diagnosis. This paper presents the theoretical background of this technique, and the interpretation of half-cell potential mapping.
