The characteristics and mechanisms of accelerated corrosion due to erosion for an AISI 1020 steel were investigated using a combination of dry erosion and electrochemical measurements. The open-circuit potential shifted in a negative direction due to erosion, and thus corrosion was thermodynamically accelerated. The polarization resistance of the corrosion reaction was reduced due to erosion, and thus the corrosion reaction was kinetically accelerated. As a result of these two effects, the corrosion rate is increased due to erosion. The accumulated internal strain due to erosion leads to a decrease in both the open-circuit potential and polarization resistance, and thereby an increase in corrosion rate.
