Maximum attainable heat flux of nucleate pool boiling on a fine heated wire increases with increasing subcooling. The critical condition appears in two ways: At low subcoolings, transition from nucleate to film boiling takes place whereas at high subcoolings, burnout takes place. In the present experiment, the effects of subcooling and the heat capacity of the heated wire (material and size) are investigated by employing platinum, nichkrome and stainless steel wires and by changing their diameter. The other features of critical condition are also discussed.
